The Smallest Dogs
The smallest dog
breed is the chihuahua, which weighs 2-6 lbs (1-3kg) and stands 6-9in
(15-23 cm) at the shoulder. However, the smallest fully-grown dog ever
is in dispute: it is between two Yorkshire terriers, one named Whitney.
They are both the same size, but Whitney was measured in 2002, making
the other dog the current smallest dog. Which one do you think deserves
the title?
Australian Rabbits
Originally there
were no rabbits in Australia. The first ones were brought in 1859 by an
English settler to remind him of home. Since then, their number has
been increasing rapidly and so has their competition for food with the
native animals. Now, for each person in Australia there are around 16
rabbits.
Almonds
Did you know that almonds are
actually a member of the peach family? They both belong to the
subfamily Prunus, as do the plum, cherry, and apricot. So botanically
soeaking, the almond is not a nut, but a fruit. Almonds grow on trees
as apricots do and represent the seeds of these trees.
What is Mona Lisa Missing?
If you look
carefully at Mona Lisa's face, you'll notice that she has no eyebrows.
It was common for women in Renaissance Florence to shave them off.
Another curious fact is that some art experts suggest that the Mona
Lisa is actually a self-portrait, because of the great similarity
between her and Leonardo Da Vinci's facial features. The painting is
property of the French government and can be seen in Muse du Louvre in
Paris.
How Small you Were!
Did you know that
you spent approximately half an hour of your life being a single cell?
These were the first 30 minutes after the moment of your conception.
Your body today consists of approx. 40-75 trillion cells. (Different
sources give numbers as low as 10 trillion and as high as 100 trillion.)
Chimps!
The chimpanzee is our closest
relative, with 99.4% of our genetic material being identical to theirs.
They are very sociable animals and have the ability to learn sign
language. Chimps manufacture and use tools -- most often to get to
some kind of food (sticks to gather insects, stones to crack hard
seeds, etc.) Chimpanzees are unique in their ability to recognize
themselves in a mirror.
